How can we help?

Answers to the questions people ask most, and a real person on the other end of the email.

General

Which apps does it work in?

Any app where you can type. On iPhone and Android, VoiceType is your keyboard, so it is everywhere a keyboard appears. On Mac and Windows, VoiceInput types into whichever text field your cursor is in.

Will it change what I said?

Only through switches you can see. Fixing obvious grammar, applying your custom vocabulary and changing the tone are separate switches: grammar and vocabulary start on (on Android every step starts off), and a tone is off until you pick one. Clean-up only tidies what you said: it never answers a question you dictated, writes something new, or adds a greeting or signature.

Does it work offline?

Typing on the keyboards works fully offline. Voice typing with AI needs an internet connection; every app also has a built-in recognizer that works on the device. On a Mac with macOS 14 or 15, Apple's recognizer may still use Apple's servers until macOS has its on-device speech model.

Is my vocabulary shared between devices?

Yes, when you sign in with the same account. Your custom vocabulary and dictation history follow you between iPhone, Android, Mac and Windows.

Does it ever make a sound?

No. None of the apps play chimes, beeps or spoken alerts. Status and problems are shown on screen, so it is safe to use in meetings. The only audio is text you ask to have read aloud.

iPhone

How do I turn on the keyboard?

Open VoiceType and follow the setup, or go to Settings › General › Keyboard › Keyboards › Add New Keyboard and choose VoiceType. Then switch to it with the globe key.

Do I need Full Access?

Not for typing. Typing, autocorrect, swipe and emoji work without Full Access. Voice dictation needs it, because that is how iOS lets a keyboard work with its app.

Can I start dictation without opening the keyboard?

Yes: ask Siri, or, on iOS 18 or later, use Control Center, the Action button or the Lock Screen. On iOS 18 a Live Activity also shows when the mic is on, with Stop and Resume.

Where is my dictation history?

In the VoiceType app. Every dictation is saved every few seconds while you speak, and you can search it and copy from it.

Android

When will it be on Google Play?

Soon. It is in testing now. Email us at sharathck3@gmail.com with the Google account on your phone to ask for early access.

How do I type Telugu?

Type Telugu words in English letters, like “nenu” or “ela unnaru”. The Telugu words appear above the keys; tap one to put it in.

Can I download it from this website?

No. VoiceType for Android installs from Google Play only.

Mac

VoiceInput says I need a subscription. What do I do?

VoiceInput for Mac is included with VoiceType Monthly. In the VoiceType app on your iPhone, sign in with a Google or email account and subscribe; then sign in on the Mac with that same account. If you just subscribed, use Refresh subscription status in VoiceInput.

My iPhone subscription doesn't unlock the Mac.

The Mac unlocks for the account that holds the subscription, so the iPhone needs a Google or email sign-in. Subscribed without signing in? Sign in to VoiceType on your iPhone with Google or email, then sign in on the Mac with that same account and choose Refresh subscription status. Still locked? Email us.

Dictation does not type into my app.

Check System Settings › Privacy & Security › Accessibility and make sure VoiceInput is switched on. macOS needs this before any app can type into another one. VoiceInput also never types into password fields.

The pill says it is waiting for the microphone.

Check System Settings › Privacy & Security › Microphone, and that the microphone you want is connected. VoiceInput picks the microphone at the start of every dictation.

Can I change the shortcuts?

Yes. Open VoiceInput's settings from the menu bar and choose Shortcuts. The defaults are ⌃⇧Space (hold to talk) and ⌥Space (hands-free).

Windows

Windows says it protected my PC.

That is SmartScreen. VoiceInput is not code-signed yet, so choose More info, then Run anyway.

I can't see the microphone icon.

Click the ^ arrow in the notification area, next to the clock. You can drag the microphone out so it always shows.

Can I change the shortcuts?

Yes, in VoiceInput's Settings. The defaults are Ctrl+Shift+Space (hold to talk) and Alt+Space (hands-free).

Recording or screenshots ask me to sign in.

Dictation works without an account, but the capture shortcuts (recordings, meeting notes, screenshots and tasks) save to your account's to-do list, so they need a Google or email sign-in. Sign in from the microphone in the notification area.

How do I uninstall it?

Open Settings from the microphone in the notification area and choose Uninstall VoiceInput.

Billing

How do I cancel VoiceType Monthly?

On your iPhone: Settings › [your name] › Subscriptions › VoiceType. Cancel at least 24 hours before the end of the current period.

How do I get a refund?

App Store purchases are refunded by Apple. Request one at reportaproblem.apple.com.

How do I delete my account?

In the VoiceType app on your iPhone or Android phone, from your account settings; that deletes the account and its VoiceType data, but not the recordings, screenshots and tasks made with VoiceInput's capture shortcuts. VoiceInput for Mac and Windows has no delete button. If you only use the desktop apps, or used the capture shortcuts, email sharathck3@gmail.com from your account's address and we will delete it.
